Hands-On History: History at Sea: Exploring the New World

  • Des Plaines History Center 781 Pearson Street Des Plaines, IL 60016 United States (map)

Join the Des Plaines History Center for the latest Hands-On History program for kids:  “History at Sea: Exploring the New World.” All children, ages 5-12, and their families, are invited to attend the program at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, and again on Sunday, March 10.

Sailing ships have captured our imaginations since the first European explorers set out to find new lands, gold, and more. Come dive into life at sea with projects like making compasses, creating maps, and trying traditional ship's rations!

“Sea voyages during the Age of Discovery, which began in the 1400s and lasted into the 1600s, had a profound impact on human history, including the creation of global trade networks,” Interpretive Curator Emma Marston said. “However, life at sea could also be more complicated and dangerous than most people realize. I hope this program will give families some insight into the reality as well as the excitement of the Age of Discovery!”

This program is free, due to the generosity of our sponsors: Kiwanis Club of Des Plaines and Village Bank & Trust. The Des Plaines History Center is located at 781 Pearson St.,  in Des Plaines.

Registration is required to attend “History at Sea: Exploring the New World” and for all Hands-on History for Kids programs moving forward. To register, please call 847-391-5399 or email contact@desplaineshistory.org.  Any day-of availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hands-On History is a monthly children’s program series meant to invite public participation and interaction with a broad range of historical topics per the History Center’s mission. Donations are appreciated. Join us in April for our next Hands-on History for Kids program: “Art in Nature.”
