Collectors Evening: Traveling

Share your souvenirs and postcards at the Des Plaines History Center

Ever want to share a favorite souvenir with someone? Residents are invited to bring in their mementos, postcards, and travel diaries as well as view the Des Plaines History Center’s items related to travel at its Collectors Evening program Thursday, September 11, from 7-8 p.m. at 781 Pearson Street, Des Plaines.

This session will complement the History Center’s new travel exhibit, “Greetings from Des Plaines,” which opened in August and will run through the end of year. The first Collectors Evening was held in June, and those who came appreciated getting a close-up view of handmade clothing from the History Center’s collections. For this second program, travel items will be displayed, and Philip Mohr, curator of the History Center, will provide the history of each piece. In addition, residents are encouraged to bring in their family’s beloved travel tokens and talk about their significance.

We’ll view a few things that didn’t make it into the exhibit,” said Mohr. “Feel free to bring postcards, letters, journals, souvenirs, and ashtrays stolen from hotel rooms. It will be a very interesting discussion.”

Mohr added that the public is welcome to post a photo of any of their travel items on desplainesmemory.org. Collectors Evening will occur every third month on a Thursday evening. For more information, call 847-391-5399.

After the program, guests are invited to stay and view the History Center’s the travel exhibit.

The Des Plaines History Center gratefully acknowledges operating support from the City of Des Plaines, the Des Plaines Park District, its members, and other contributors.
